If you’re searching for “how much does a family photographer cost,” you’re probably discovering that prices are all over the map. From $150 mini sessions to $2,500+ luxury packages, the range can feel overwhelming and confusing.
As a Seattle family photographer specializing in lifestyle photography, I’m pulling back the curtain on what family photographers actually cost, what you’re really paying for, and how to find the right photographer for your family.
Family Photography Costs: The Real Numbers
Let’s start with what you came here for: the actual prices.
What Family Photography Sessions Cost in Seattle
In the Seattle area, including Bellevue, Kirkland, and Redmond, family photography pricing varies widely depending on the level of service and experience. Budget or entry-level photographers typically charge between $250 and $500 for a 30–60 minute session, offering a limited number of edited images and often charging extra for digital files or prints. Mid-range photographers fall in the $500 to $1000+ range, with longer sessions, more refined editing, and added services like styling guidance, prep materials, and sometimes print credits. At the upper end, luxury photographers charge $1,200 to $2,500 or more, especially when custom albums, wall art, and extended session options are included. These sessions often feature highly personalized service, expert retouching, and a boutique experience from start to finish.
Pricing also varies based on how a photographer operates. Some are are all inclusive, while charge a session (creative) fee and sell collections or art work after galleries are delivered.
My Family Photography Session Pricing
I offer three session types to meet different needs and budgets. Most of my sessions are all inclusive and include a digital gallery of all the edited images with a print release.
Portrait Session (Maternity, Motherhood, or Family) – $595
All-inclusive maternity, motherhood, or family portrait session. These sessions are up to 60 min long and allow time for both posed and candid moments, with a focus on genuine connection and storytelling.
Newborn Session – $750
A quiet, unrushed baby-led experience designed to honor the tender rhythm of early parenthood. These sessions take place in the comfort of your home and unfold gently over up to 2 hours, with plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and snuggling breaks as needed. These sessions are up to 2 hours long and include an all-inclusive digital gallery and a print release.
Petite Session – $395
A relaxed 30-minute session is a thoughtful middle ground between a mini and a full session and is perfect for families who want meaningful storytelling without committing to a full-length session. You’ll receive 30 hand-edited, high-resolution images with the option to upgrade to the full gallery for $150.
Extended Family Session – $595+
For extended family sessions with more than 6 people, I add $25 per additional person to account for the extra time, coordination, and groupings required.

Why Do Family Photography Sessions Cost So Much?
This is the question I hear most often, and it’s a fair one. When you see a price tag of $500, $700, or even $1,000+ for a one-hour session, it can feel steep, especially if you’re comparing it to an hourly wage.
But here’s what most families don’t realize: the session itself is the smallest part of what you’re paying for.
The Hidden Hours Behind Your Family Photos
For every client session I shoot, I typically invest 8 to 15 hours of work. Here’s where that time goes:
- Pre-session communication and consultation
- Location planning and scouting (especially tricky in the Pacific Northwest where light and weather are unpredictable)
- Styling guidance and wardrobe consulting
- Travel time to and from the session
- The actual photo session
- Culling through thousands of images to select the best ones
- Slow, careful editing to maintain a cohesive, film-like style
- Exporting, uploading, backing up, and delivering your gallery
- Optional print shop support and product guidance
When families book a “one-hour session,” what they’re really purchasing is a full-service experience that spans several days and requires significant expertise, equipment, and behind-the-scenes work.
The Real Cost of Running a Photography Business
It’s easy to assume that a session fee goes straight to the photographer, but in reality, a large portion of that goes right back into running the business.
Professional photographers have significant business expenses:
- Professional equipment: Multiple camera bodies, lenses, and backups often cost $10,000 to $20,000 or more
- Technology: computer hardware, editing software subscriptions, external hard drives, and backup systems
- Insurance: Liability and equipment insurance
- Website and gallery hosting: Professional platforms for delivering images
- Marketing and education: SEO, advertising, workshops, mentorships, and ongoing training
- Taxes (ugh!): Self-employed photographers typically pay 30–40% in taxes
By the time business expenses and taxes come out, photographers often take home far less than clients imagine.
How to Choose the Right Family Photographer (Beyond the Price Tag)
Price matters, but it shouldn’t be your only consideration. Here’s my advice for families shopping for a photographer:
Look at the Experience, Not Just the Hourly Rate
A 60-minute session isn’t just an hour of work, it’s the tip of the iceberg. Ask yourself: Will this photographer guide us through the process? Help us prepare? Create a relaxed, confident environment on the day of the shoot?
A calm, experienced photographer makes a world of difference, especially when kids are involved.
Assess Emotional Intelligence, Not Just Artistic Style
You might love someone’s portfolio, but do they see people the way you want to be seen?
For me, the heart of this work is honoring motherhood, family connection, and everyday beauty. I aim to make moms feel seen and valued, not just captured on camera. That perspective shapes everything from how I communicate before the session to how I interact with your family during it.
3. Ask What’s Included
Does the session come with a set number of digital images? A full gallery? Are professional prints or albums available? Some photographers offer a lower session fee but charge for add-ons later. Others (like me) are all-inclusive. Make sure you understand what’s built into the cost so you’re not surprised by extra charges.
4. Consider Their “Why”
When you understand a photographer’s motivation, you get a sense of what they’ll bring to your session beyond technical skill.
For me, photography began as a creative outlet from my tech career, but it shifted when I became a mom myself. I saw how invisible mothers can feel in their own family stories, always behind the camera, rarely in front of it. I wanted to change that.
I wanted moms to not only be present in the frame, but to feel beautiful, seen, and valued in a way that feels honest. Not styled to perfection, but documented with intention. The quiet snuggles, the wild hair, the soft moments between chaos – that’s the heart of what I try to preserve.
Photography became more than a hobby or even a side business. It became a way to honor the emotional weight of motherhood – the effort, the sacrifice, the love that often goes unnoticed but deserves to be remembered.
This work is deeply personal to me, and every session is an opportunity to help another mother feel like her story matters too.
5. Read the Reviews—But Read Between the Lines
Don’t just skim the star ratings. Look for comments about how the photographer made clients feel.
Were they patient with toddlers? Did they help the family relax? Did the mom leave the session feeling beautiful and at ease? These details tell you more about the experience than a five-star rating alone.
6. Evaluate Consistency, Not Just Highlights
Social media shows the best shots – the one magical frame that stopped people from scrolling. But what about the rest of the gallery?
Ask to see full galleries from past sessions. This will give you a much better sense of how the photographer handles lighting, variety, candid moments, and editing across an entire session, not just the highlight reel.
7. Think Long-Term
These images aren’t just for right now. They’re for your kids to look back on one day. They’re the ones you’ll frame, gift to grandparents, and cry over when your babies aren’t babies anymore.
Quality matters. Connection matters. Storytelling matters.
Is Family Photography Worth the Investment?
Only you can answer that question for your family. But I’ll tell you what I believe:
Family photography is worth it when you find the right photographer.
The right photographer won’t just take pictures of your family, they’ll help you see the beauty in your everyday life, capture the connections that make your family unique, and create images that become more precious with every passing year.
