Bringing a new baby home is a beautiful whirlwind. You’re adjusting to a whole new rhythm, barely sleeping, and soaking up the sweetest (and most exhausting) days of your life.
As a newborn photographer in Seattle and a mom of 3 little kids, I know how overwhelming it can feel to schedule a photo session during this time. But I also know how incredibly meaningful these photos become—not just in the months ahead, but for decades.
If you’re wondering what to expect or how to prepare, here are 5 gentle truths I share with every new mom before their newborn photography session:

1. You don’t need to “prep” your baby.
Sleepy or wide awake, calm or fussy—it’s all welcome. I follow your baby’s cues throughout the session, taking breaks as needed for feeding, soothing, and snuggling. My approach is baby-led, which means your little one sets the pace. There’s no pressure, and no such thing as a “bad session.”
2. You don’t need to clean your house.
If we’re doing an in-home newborn session in Seattle, I’ll simply find one or two well-lit spots to work in—usually near a window, on your bed, or by the couch. The rest of your space can stay perfectly lived-in. No tidying necessary. You just had a baby!

3. You don’t need to “bounce back.”
You created life. Your body is powerful and beautiful exactly as it is right now. During your session, I’ll gently guide you into natural, flattering poses that honor this sacred season of motherhood. You’ll never be asked to do anything that feels performative or posed—I’m here to help you feel seen and celebrated.
4. Connection matters more than perfection.
The way you look at your baby. The way their tiny fingers wrap around yours. The way your partner leans in to kiss your forehead. These quiet, fleeting moments are what we’re documenting—not perfection, but presence. So, whether we’re shooting in your home or outdoors in Seattle, my goal is to capture the emotion of this chapter—not just the aesthetics.

5. These days are a blur—and that’s okay.
You might not remember much from the newborn haze, but your photos will bring it all rushing back: the weight of your baby in your arms, their milky skin, their sleepy breath. That’s the gift of newborn photography—a tangible reminder of how it all began.
